SFS chairman Jacob Färnert and vice-chair Klara Dryselius write a debate article in Publikt about erosion of higher education, authority capital and total funding for research and education due to SFS's latest report Have the universities stopped saving?.
In the long term, education grants must be substantially strengthened. Otherwise, the number of students will have to decrease or it will be necessary to compromise on the quality of the educations, which goes completely against society's great need for a highly educated workforce.
But in the meantime, the government should relax the outdated regulations and let the universities redistribute government capital between education and research. Then they themselves will be able to handle the worst shocks right now.
If the financial conditions of higher education are not improved, it will be next to impossible to train all the new engineers, teachers and nurses that society needs.
