SFS chairman Jacob Färnert and vice chairman Klara Dryselius write a debate article in Publikt about the erosion of higher education, government capital and overall funding for research and education in response to SFS's latest report Have universities stopped saving?.
In the long term, education funding must be significantly increased. Otherwise, the number of students will have to decrease or it will be necessary to compromise on the quality of education, which goes completely against society's great need for a highly educated workforce.
But in the meantime, the government should ease the outdated regulations and let universities reallocate government capital between education and research. Then they themselves will be able to handle the worst shocks right now.
Unless the financial conditions of higher education improve, it will be almost impossible to train all the new engineers, teachers and nurses that society needs.
