The debate about How the rules for residence permits will look in the future has been a hot topic recently. Today we in SFS and SFS-DK, together with SULF, write that the support requirement is very poorly adapted to the situation of doctoral students and researchers. We will also publish a blog post in English this afternoon that explains the regulations and goes into more detail about what the situation looks like. Read an excerpt of the debate article below and in its entirety here.
Today, around 40 percent of all doctoral students and around 75 percent of all those with a so-called merit-based position (a position held within a certain period of time after completing a doctoral degree) in Sweden have a foreign background. They constitute an extremely important resource for Sweden's future research. Being able to keep them in Sweden is therefore crucial for the supply of skills both at our universities and in other activities.
