PRESS RELEASE:
The housing shortage remains serious for students. 70 percent of students live at a study location that cannot offer students accommodation during the fall semester. Rents continue to rise and several student unions testify that students are having to choose their study location because they cannot find or afford accommodation.
“Rents have really gone through the roof. Last year there was an increase of 4,3 percent and now it is 5 percent,” says Rasmus Lindstedt, chairman of the Swedish National Union of Students.
The good news is that five study locations that were yellow last year have become green: Falun, Helsingborg, Luleå, Trollhättan and Växjö. Unfortunately, they account for a relatively small portion of the student population.
We have also taken a closer look at study locations that claim to have a housing guarantee. Five of the cities that have a housing guarantee are marked in yellow and one is even marked in red.
–It may seem frivolous that places claim to have a housing guarantee but that you are still left without accommodation at the start of the semester. It is important that students are aware of this so that they are not misled, says Rasmus Lindstedt.
