Statement: Surveillance has no place in academia

The Corruption Investigation (Ju 2023:25) is now considering imposing an increased obligation on universities to share information with the Swedish Migration Board. The investigation is due to be reported on 14 March.

At present, it is unclear which student data would be covered and how it would be used, which risks creating a legally uncertain situation for international students.

In a feature on P3 news, SFS vice-chairwoman Elsa Berlin speaks out about the risks for students:

– The purpose of universities and colleges is to educate, conduct research and disseminate knowledge, not to be a tool for state surveillance.

Imposing an information-sharing obligation on higher education institutions threatens academic freedom as well as the trust between students and higher education institutions.
