Debate: Stop eroding higher education

SFS makes a joint debate post with S-students and Moderate students, where we call on the government to abolish the so-called productivity deduction.

After the financial crisis in the 90s, Sweden's central government debt was soaring and steadily growing. Therefore, the productivity deduction was introduced, which means that 1–2 per cent is deducted annually from central government grants to the authorities with the aim of saving on public expenditure. Since most of the country's universities are authorities, this also applies to them. In practice, this means that higher education is less and less compensated for its costs every year.

About the state budget is an expression of our common priorities, it is clear that every government, regardless of color, shows that higher education is not a priority. Year after year, the resources that benefit Sweden's students decrease, when the productivity deduction eats up the money the higher education institutions have for teaching. A change needs to take place.
