The report also shows that two thirds of the country's higher education institutions lack guidelines for teaching staff to receive competence development in pedagogy. Two out of three higher education institutions also lack central systems for assessing pedagogical skills. In other words, it is extremely doubtful whether it pays to be a good teacher at Swedish universities.

- It is time to stop blaming the students and start developing the teaching instead. All higher education institutions should demand that all teaching staff have pedagogical training and ensure that there are systems that reward talented teachers, comments Johan Alvfors, vice chairman of the Swedish National Union of Students, SFS.

The report, which is based on a survey that has been sent to all Swedish higher education institutions, shows, among other things:

  • 60 per cent of the country's higher education institutions do not require that all teaching staff have completed a higher education pedagogical education.
  • Two thirds of the country's higher education institutions lack guidelines for teaching staff to receive competence development in pedagogy.
  • Less than half of the country's higher education institutions always use a special expert to assess teachers' pedagogical skills.
  • Two out of three higher education institutions lack central systems for assessing pedagogical skills.
